South Salem's Daschel Smith (12) scrambles the ball during the Sept. 17 game against Grants Pass.

South Salem quarterback Daschel Smith has committed to playing college football at Southern Oregon University.

As a senior this past fall, Smith helped the Saxons finish 8-2 and reach the OSAA Class 6A state playoffs.

Smith completed 69% of his passes for 2,860 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also rushed for five touchdowns.

Smith was the Statesman Journal All-Mid-Valley Offensive Player of the Year.

“First was the coaching staff, some new and some renewed there, and that’s important to me to have a fresh start,” Smith said about why he chose Southern Oregon. “Having a scholarship to accept is always a blessing, and not having to go in debt because of it is crucial for me as well.”

Southern Oregon went 3-7 last season, and this coming season will have a new head coach.

Berk Brown was hired in January to take over as the Raiders’ head football coach after Charlie Hall resigned.

“The location I like because of the closeness of everything, downtown, the school, and the whole town,” Smith said.
