A 25-year-old man faces alleged assault and bias charges after a crash Tuesday led to gunfire and an assault, according to Salem Police.

Police said they responded to a crash at the intersection of Lancaster Drive and Market Street NE at 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday. Samuel Bailey Caster-Winegeart, who was driving a crossover sedan, allegedly shot at a mid-size SUV he believed struck his vehicle, police said.

According to police, Caster-Winegeart, who is white, then approached the SUV that was pulling over to the side of the road, yelled a racial slur at the driver, who is Black, and punched through the partially-open window, striking the SUV driver in the face.

The SUV driver was not shot but did receive treatment for injuries related to the physical assault at Salem Health, police said.

Caster-Winegeart was arraigned Tuesday afternoon and faces two felony bias crime charges, felony unlawful use of a weapon, and assault in the fourth degree.

His bail was set at $250,000.
