McKay’s Miguel Garcia (13) chases after the ball during the first half of the playoff game against Mountain View at McKay High School in Salem, Ore. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022.

History will be made on Saturday when No. 2 McKay and No. 5 West Albany compete in the 5A boys soccer state championship final at Hillsboro Stadium.

Both teams will be making their first appearance in a tournament final, with the matchup set for 10:30 a.m., while McKay will be looking to add its third state title in any team sport since 1986.

That year, the girls tennis team finished in five-way tie for first, and the boys track and field team finished in a three-way tie for first.

Since then, McKay has made one state final appearance when the 1997 Scots baseball team lost to Madison in the 4A final.

It’s been a long time coming for McKay and West Albany — two familiar opponents in the Mid-Willamette Conference — and although one will be crowned the champion, both teams have had to work hard to reach the final.
