Salem Police said one person died and another was arrested after a traffic accident in north Salem Thursday night.

Police allege that at about 9:15 p.m., a 27-year-old man was driving a BMW north on Hawthorne Avenue near the intersection with Silverton Road.

Police said the car didn’t take the slight left in Hawthorne and instead went straight through a fence and into a parking lot of United Rentals. The BMW crashed into a piece of heavy equipment in the parking lot, according to police.

Police say an occupant of the BMW, 25-year-old Jose Milian, died of injuries from the crash.

Police say that at 10 p.m., they responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at Winema Place, about a half mile from the crash site and near Chemeketa Community College.

Police found the 27-year-old man, who said he was looking for his vehicle.

The man was arrested and is scheduled for arraignment at 2:30 p.m. Friday on charges including manslaughter, driving under the influence and failure to perform the duties of a driver.
