McKay boys soccer competes Tuesday.

The OSAA soccer state playoffs continued Tuesday with the semifinals, and Mid-Valley team McKay boys soccer punched their ticket to the state championship with a win over La Salle Prep.

McKay clinches first state appearance in school history, first in any sport since 1997

McKay needed to score badly to stay alive in the 5A state semifinal match against No. 3 La Salle Prep on Tuesday night.

With five seconds left in the match, the Scots did that and sent the game into overtime with junior forward Miguel Garcia scoring the game winning goal in the fourth minute, clinching No. 2 McKay its first state final appearance in school history.

“This is for the community,” McKay head coach Juan Llamas said after the victory. “I feel like McKay gets a bad name all the time, which I feel like they don’t deserve it. If you walk the halls, see the staff and admin, it’s a pretty tight-knit community. We said we were going to be here, and the community showed up.”
