A giant Pacific octopus seen swimming through the Yaquina Head tidepools in Newport.

Newport had an exciting aquatic visitor on Thursday. A giant Pacific octopus was seen swimming through the Yaquina Head tidepools, according to a Facebook post from the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The octopus is only seen visiting these tidepools a few times times a year, although department officials said it likely visits more often.

The sneaky creature is a master of disguise and changes its skin color and texture to adapt to its environment, officials said. This octopus is actually on the smaller side compared to other giant Pacific octopuses, which can grow as large as 16 feet long, officials said.
