South Salem's Daschel Smith (12) scrambles the ball during the game against Grants Pass on Sept. 17 in Salem.

South Salem’s offense has been high-flying this season, scoring 42.8 points per game.

Sprague will try to slow down the Saxons at 7:15 p.m. Friday in the Statesman Journal Game of the Week.

South Salem’s scoring average ranks third in the state at the Class 6A level, behind Sheldon and West Linn.

Saxons senior quarterback Daschel Smith leads the state with 2,301 passing yards and 25 passing touchdowns this season.

Sprague is allowing 23.7 points per game, which ranks sixth in Special District 1.

“The keys to slowing down their offense is pressure to the quarterback,” Sprague senior Drew Rodriguez said. “Doing assignments right defensively and playing the most physical we have all year.”

Both the Saxons and Olympians are trying to make the 16-team state playoff, with South Salem ranked No. 10 and Sprague No. 23 in the OSAA rankings with two games left.

Sprague is 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the league.

The Olympians, who are 4-0 at home and 0-3 on the road, have won three of their past four games with wins against Roseburg, West Salem and North Salem.
