The recall of a city councilor in Turner appears to be successful after the initial batch of results were released Tuesday night by the Marion County Clerk showing voters were recalling Mark McCracken by a 2-1 margin.
McCracken was voted into office in the 2020 election, and his term runs through 2023. This was his first public office. He is a retired North High School teacher.
If the recall is successful, there will be an election May 16 to fill the position.
Turner, located a mile southeast of Salem, has a population of 2,944.
In his Statement of Justification, McCracken said that the recall was undertaken by “disgruntled past members” of the Crawford Crossing Home Owners Association Board” in response to a challenge to be accountable to home owners.
He called the recall committee “vindictive influencers who cannot have their way.”
The group seeking to recall McCracken cited his support for expansion of the city’s urban growth boundary, opposition to the Cascade’s 2021 school bond ballot measure and posts on social media in response to the mother of a child with cancer.
They called McCracken’s comments on social media “extremely insensitive and rude.”
